Background Three months ago, I wrote a post titled Hiring in a 2.0 World. I thought it might pique a few folks curiousity but had no idea that it would result in posts by Shel Israel, Bryan Person, and Kate Olson's among others, a speaking opportunity at a social media breakfast (video) and numerous video/podcast interviews. I was really blown away when U.S. News and World Report showed interest (they first wrote a blog post and then interviewed me for a column). I only mention this because it ...     Read entire post

Last week I had the privilege of attending the Enterprise 2.0 Conference in Boston. In addition to speaking on the "Vendor Shoot Out Panel" on Wednesday evening, I had high hopes of doing some podcasting a la SXSW or Community 2.0 (see my colleague, Jim's, blog if you want to listen to any of those podcasts). Unfortunately, business got in the way (three analyst briefings, lots of networking and trying to keep up with e-mails). So instead of recording 6-8 podcasts, I lined up three kic ...     Read entire post

A few weeks ago at the Community 2.0 Conference, I had the pleasure of talking with social media measurement guru, Katie Paine. I first met Katie several months ago when I had the opportunity to sit on a Social Media Club panel with her. During the panel, I remember listening intently to everything she was saying (probably more than I should have as a fellow panelist). While I was at the C20 Conference, I decided I was going to capture some of Katie's great advice. Listen and watch as Katie and ...     Read entire post

Last night I ordered four tickets to go see Sheryl Crow this summer with my wife and a couple friend of ours. As an added bonus for the $300 I spent on tickets, I got four free downloads on iTunes. These four songs valued at $3.96 made me strangely happy. Sort of like found money I guess and of course they immediately started burning a hole in my provebial pocket. I've picked up a dozen new songs lately so I pretty much have all the songs I like (the ones that were at least top of mind). So whe ...     Read entire post

UPDATED 5/30: Bryan Person and I sat down and did a podcast on this topic this AM. Take a listen. I'm being auctioned off for charity. Well, not me personally, but my services. A two hour consulting session to be exact. It's for my friend, Jennifer Leggio AKA "Mediaphyter" on Twitter. The money raised is for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. I'm in some pretty good company given the fact that Chris Brogan (blogging god), Joe Jaffe (principle at Crayon), Geoff Livingston (author) an ...     Read entire post

This is from a podcast I did last week with Jerry Wind - one of our original We Are Smarter Than Me book collaborators and Professor at The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania (among other things). This is going to provide some of the fodder for the last chapter of our second We Are Smarter book. If you have thoughts on this topic - please include ASAP and I'll send to our writers to include in the chapter with attribution. I know folks don't always like to have to login/sign up to comme ...     Read entire post

Any of you that read my blog or listen to my weekly WE Show podcast series know that I like to talk about smart companies that are using community and social media to improve their businesses. I like it even better when one of the smart companies I'm talking about happens to be a client as well. In this particular case, one of the companies we work with, iRise, is asking the members of its industry community, Catalyze.org, to create a commercial for their company. The name of the contest they ...     Read entire post

No "I" or "Me" in "WE" Marketing

Background I've spent a lot of time as a "Me" marketer - nearly 15 years as a matter of fact. During those 15 years, I've done "Me" marketing at a small agency, a financial giant (Fidelity Investments) and eventually for an white-lable community company (Shared Insights/now Mzinga). Ironically, most of the "Me" marketing I did during that time was in the online/Web channel but that didn't make it "WE." If you're wondering what the hell I'm talking about, ...     Read entire post

Getting There It's not often that you get to go to the United Nations building in NYC. It's even less frequent that you get to go to the UN and speak. I had the privilege of doing both on Tuesday and it was worth every minute of sleep I missed (got up at 4:15 AM to catch a 6:00 AM Shuttle from Boston.) The occasion for visiting/speaking at the UN was the "United Nations Meets Web 2.0" Conference (March 25-26.) Unfortunately, I had to cut my trip short since but I packed a lot into ...     Read entire post

THIS WAS ORIGINALLY POSTED ON MZINGA.COM ON 3/21 Today's Hiring Process My company, Mzinga, is in the process of hiring for several positions. Given the fact that we are a company focused on building community for other businesses, the thought occurred to me that I might start practicing what we preach in the world of recruiting. In order to do this, changes to the existing process need to be made. Like many other companies, here's what our basic hiring process looks like today: Open ...     Read entire post
