Originally, I was going to write a post today called "Twitter: Revisited." Some of you might remember a post I wrote last month about Twitter, focused on why it wasn't ready for prime time. Well, I've had some time to use it more (220 tweets and counting) and would like to share my new perspective. However, several of my colleagues here on We Are Smarter Than Me have relentlessly covered Twitter in recent posts, so I'll put that one on the back burner for now.
Instead, let's talk about the announcement of a 3G iPhone coming soon and my experience with the iPhone to date. First of all, it's important to point out that I just started using a Blackberry (on the Verizon network) back in March. From the get go I was in love. It's just a great device that was a real time saver for me from day one. Sure, it's a little big (I have the 8703) and it's not the sexiest device on the market, but what it does it does really well (email, phone, calendar, web).
Then the iPhone comes out and it's all the rage. A colleague gets one and it's clearly one of the coolest devices I've ever played with. I end up getting one (on the cheap) and open it up (without signing up for AT&T service) so I can play with it via WIFI. It's intriguing without the phone piece, but still something is missing.
Eventually, I get sucked into the upgrade path and end up signing up for AT&T phone/data service (last week). When you add in the phone functionality it just gets better (I love the way it knows when I want to end a call). But my greatest fears are realized when I take it on a trip and I'm subjected the EDGE network. It's painful. I get in the habit of requesting a web page and setting the iPhone down to do something else while the page loads (WTF?!). I haven't decided if this is a deal killer for me (I still have a couple of weeks to cancel service before I'm locked in), but it could be. So far I've been pleasantly surprised with the phone coverage in my local area.
But now we have the announcement of the 3G version to complicate matters. It sounds like they must have fixed the battery drain issue and plan to release it sometime next summer. IMHO, a 3G iPhone could be an absolute category killer. The LG Voyager and GPhone have nothing on it.
So the BIG question is should I cancel my service with AT&T, sell the iPhone on Craigslist and wait until next summer? Am I making more of this than I should be? I'm not locked in with Verizon anymore, so I could just make a clean switch... decisions, decisions... Your comments are appreciated.
