In this blog, I will discuss effective User Interface design for Social Media platforms. I'll shine the light on sites that should be admired for doing it well and say, "thanks for playing" to the others. Beneath the surface of creating a "community that clicks", I also love talking about Internet marketing, online trust & user reputation, as well as the economics of contribution.
Google is getting sneaky

I hate when products have options I probably don't want auto checked by default. Well that's not entirely true - I love it when I comment on some blogs (like UniversalHub) and it subscribes me automatically to be notified when others comment on the same post. I can easily shut that off in my subscription settings. I like that particular feature because if I comment on a post, I'm probably interested when others reply to that.
Now on the other hand, when Google tells me there is a new version of ...

So I was looking at some of the new web based products from Demo '08, and there is some cool new stuff out there in beta.
The product I liked the best (and I haven't even gotten to use it yet) is blist. I may change my mind once I use it, but right now I love it. They are in beta right now and I signed up to be part of their beta, why haven't they let me in yet?? Hurry up! LOL
I like it for a few reasons:
First, the product looks so much like a design I did for another web based product I des ...

MySpace’s new home page

MySpace has upgraded the home page for their users. For the longest time the user’s profile page was not editable at all. MySpace decided what was important for you to see – and that was mostly ads.
My home page in the old UI:
This always annoyed me – I would have to scroll and scroll to actually see my friend list. And as you can see my Friend List isn't even above the fold in that screenshot. Three quarters of the page was taken up by ads and other mostly frivolous st ...

Every five years or so, the International headquarters of the American Marketing Association reviews the definition of key terms that are associated with the organization and refines their meanings. It is a disciplined effort to reflect on the state of the marketing field and this year, the AMA has redefined the word “marketing,” to reflect its broader role in society.
The new definition reads: “Marketing is the activity, set of institutions and processes for creating, c ...

How many marketers are there in the universe?

Someone asked me if I could tell her how many marketers there are in the world... including public relations.
I don’t know if there have been any studies done to determine how many marketers there are in the world today. However, within the United States and Canada, I can say that the American Marketing Association is among the largest associations for marketers and is made up of over 38,000 professional members. While many Marketing associations focus on one specific area of marketing, ( ...

If you’ve ever been to a Red Sox game in Fenway park, you are very likely to hear the fans chanting, “Yankees Suck” at some point during the game. It often doesn’t matter if we’re playing against the Twins, the Jays, the Rays or the NY Chokers themselves, you have a very good chance of hearing this unofficial Beantown mantra.
So, upon seeing the Yankees die in the first round again, I was quite inspired to write (and record) a song. After getting positive f ...

Usability of InviteShare: Slow starter but good finish

I thought I’d have a look at the awaited beta release of Y! Mash (originally called “Yahoo! Mosh”) and was stopped dead in my tracks by the dreaded message, “Mash is an invitation-only beta service”. So instead, I think I’ll talk about a great little site called, inviteShare.com where you can get an invitation into almost 50 gated sites that require a login or are currently under an invitation-only mode.
Getting started:
The index page of InviteShare ...
