This is one area that can produce instant savings for any company, but the larger companies that use third party administrators will reap the largest savings. Of the companies that have incorporated a Personal Health Record for their employees, every single one has reported a savings some as large as 800% in paid claims. This is one area that can produce instant savings for any company, but the larger companies will that use third party administrators will reap the largest savings. Of the companies that have incorporated a Personal Health Record for their employees, every single one has reported a savings some as large as 800% in paid claims. When I first saw these kind of numbers I questioned the facts behind them and thought, they cant be right.

Upon further investigation, I reviewed the data from several places such as the Harris Poll, Merkel Poll and the Institute of Medicine. All of these places simple stated that the increased cost is due 2 main controllable factors: 1 redundant medical tests, 2 duplicated lab tests. Another factor that they sited was the cost of medical and medication errors, which are a direct result of poor communication.

With the use of the internet a PHR provides the link that was never there in the past. Doctors & healthcare professionals now can access a persons PHR whether its in an emergency or a regular visit to a physician. The detail that the new PHR can contain is amazing, allergies, medical history, blood type medical directives along with specific instructions pertaining to medications.

I have compared several types of PHR's, all of which are internet based application and would recommend one, www.ER-IDcard.com, it stood out because of the number of features available for the customer, the cost and having the ability to access this information in an emergency. They also have special programs for large corporate customers. If you would like more information on a PHR just let me know. pherron2007@yahoo.com or post a comment.

One thing to keep in mind is that PHRs are typically not subject to medical privacy requirements, and so put your employees at risk for identity theft ("medical identity theft" is getting a lot more attention these days") and having their health information sold to whoever wants to buy it. In addition, insist on a thorough security and privacy review for any company you involve with this. The law is still taking shape here, but if they are hacked, or inadvertantly release personal information, your company may be liable.
